Surrey Clinical Research Centre has 30 years of experience in clinical research. It is one of the world’s leading centres for sleep and human psychopharmacology. The centre is a part of the University of Surrey and is a stand-alone purpose built centre situated between the Royal Surrey Hospital and the University in Guildford. Guildford is easily reached by train from London, approximately a 45 minute journey from Waterloo.

Surrey CRC specialises in sleep studies and uses some of the most advanced monitoring equipment to assess the effects of medication on sleep. Studies begin with a general health screen and may involve volunteers being monitored using electrodes attached to the scalp. These tests allow for accurate measurements of sleep and wakefulness in research development. The combined experience of our staff; pharmacologists, psychologists, sleep researchers and medical personnel, ensure that our studies are performed to the highest standard and comply with all the relevant regulations. All of the studies are approved by an independent ethics committee. Our research has led to over 380 publications in scientific journals and books, and is regularly presented to international meetings and societies.

We endeavour to make the volunteer’s time at the centre as comfortable as possible. There are two recreational lounges for volunteers where free time is spent during a study. The lounges are equipped with satellite television, internet access, books and board games. Volunteers have the use of shower rooms whilst staying in the centre and all meals are provided.

The centre has a 12-bedded ward and 12 individual sleep rooms where volunteers sleep, depending on the type of study. There are also a number of rooms where volunteers may be required to perform computer tests which assess psychometric performance (i.e. tasks which evaluate everyday performance such as driving).
